A Shooting Affair

It was a dark and gloomy morning that greeted my hazy, sleep-filled vision as I slapped the button of my annoying alarm off. It was 6.35am on a Saturday morning. And I was going to have my very first Archery lesson that very morning. This very morning.

Then the skies opened up and rain fell upon the earth in harsh, unmerciful torrents.

By the time I got to school, I was soaked to the skin - shoes, bag and all, and looking pretty much like a luo tang ji. My mood was like starting to turn grey like the clouds above. And then while eating my breakfast in school (a peach tart), my peach slid off the custard and landed in a puddle of water. I think my agonised scream echoed around the atrium. No, I was just jesting, but seriously. My PEEEACH!!!

Oh and I realised I haven't even grazed the surface of the main topic of today's post. All right, so the whole bunch of us who signed up for Archery as our PE Games Elective were gathered in school this rainy morning, waiting for the bus to transport us to Yishun for our Archery lesson.

The first thought that zipped into my mind upon my first glance at the bow was "Oh, my gosh". Having watched Legolas and all the elves shoot arrows in Lord of the Rings, it never really occured to me that the actual bow used and seen in real life would be, well, so HUMONGOUS!!

Geez, the friggin' bow is nearly the same height as me!! I think it IS the same height as me. Omg, it's so HUGE la! I was like gaping at it. Then the instructors taught us the different components of a basic Recurve bow and how to hold it, load the arrow and blah blah blah. Finally it was time to try it out ourselves!

I slipped on the arm guard, picked up the bow (it's pretty heavy!), held it up and nocked the arrow on the bowstring. I rested three fingers on the bowstring and raised my bow to aim at the target board. Then I drew the string back (tension tension tension) and then released it. My arrow flew through the air, hit the target board and to my utmost horror, rebounded off the board, spun in the air and landed on the ground. My third arrow finally hit the board and stuck there with a satisfying THUD.

I must say, archery was an interesting experience. It's pretty fun and definitely very challenging, because... it's DAMN HARD to hit bull's eye. Sad to say, I was unable to hit a bull's eye after those 4 hours of lesson. But it was still enjoyable nevertheless.

My very first taste of archery on the 7th of July, 2007 (07/07/07) Haha, coolness. XD
